My Top 10 Films of 2021

10. Licorice Pizza

Though it falls short as one of PTA's best, Licorice Pizza is still an entertaining time capsule of the 70s, if not a bit uneventful.

9. CODA

While a little predictable, CODA makes up for it with its strong ensemble and emotional core. The inevitable tears it leaves you with are truly earned here.

8. Don't Look Up

Adam McKay's 3rd outing into more serious territory is an end of the world plot with a biting social satire. It's a film that makes you laugh and contemplate at the same time.

7. The Tragedy of Macbeth

The most atmospheric film of the year thanks to the stunning cinematography by Bruno Delbonnell. Joel Cohen's first outing without his brother is a powerful adaptation of the classic Shakespeare play.

6. The Last Duel

Even though he is well in his 80s, Ridley Scott is still pumping out film after film on a high production level. His recent epic stands as one of his best in recent memory, and sadly an unnoticed gem among films this year.

5. Annette

Another underappreciated film to come out this past year. Annette is one of the most bizarre musicals you will ever see. It takes you through strange set-piece after strange set-piece, leaving you wondering what it's really about until the end (and possibly after).

4. Tick, tick... Boom!

Lin-Manual Miranda's directorial debut takes into the world of Jonathon Larson, the man behind "Rent". It's a fascinating examination of the mind of the struggling artist, brought to life by a fantastic performance by Andrew Garfield.

3. Drive My Car

While its three-hour run time and subtitles may throw some people off, Drive My Car is a rewarding experience to those that find it. It's a powerful exploration of humidity and the different ways traumatic events affect us.

2. West Side Story

One of Steven Speilberg's best films in years. 2021's West Side Story is every bit as beautiful and heartbreaking as the 1961 classic, and in some ways even more so.

  1. Dune

One of the best movie-going experiences I've had in a while. Denis Villeneuve's adaptation of the first half of Frank Herbert's Sci-Fi classic is simply breathtaking. What I wouldn't give to experience this film for the first time again.
